Future of KT Police Department - Budget:
Board of Supervisors Meeting
At the October 18th Board of Supervisors meeting, Chief of Police Matthew Gordon will be giving a presentation to the Board and public on his recommendation for the future of policing in Kennett Township. In short, Chief Gordon, with the support of the Township Manager, will be recommending that the Kennett Township Police Department be expanded over the next several years to meet policing needs of the Township while also ensuring Officer safety. The growth of the Police Department has long-term costs which the Board of Supervisors and community need to consider. For context, in the Chief’s proposal, the all-in cost for all emergency services in Kennett Township (Police, Fire, and EMS), is estimated to be $1,400 per household in the year 2027. These would be funded by Earned Income Tax and Real Estate taxes.
The Chief’s presentation is the beginning of a discussion about policing in Kennett Township. The Board is not slated to make any decisions about this proposal at the October 18th meeting and welcomes community feedback during the meeting as well as through direct communication.
The 2024 budget is expected to be preliminarily adopted at the Board of Supervisors’ November 1st meeting.
