Kennett Greenway Survey
The goal of the Kennett Greenway is to create a 14-mile trail loop that connects local residents to nature and to each other. Imagine safely connecting to over 10 local parks and preserves and 1,500 acres of local open space, without a car! Visualize going to concerts at Anson B Nixon, walking to local festivals, riding bikes with your children, or getting in a long run out in nature.
The Greenway will provide recreation and connection for youth and adults of all ages, including linking local schools, restaurants, businesses, the library, the senior center, fitness centers and after school programs. The Greenway seeks to increase public health, build environmental stewardship, boost the local economy and create stronger community relationships.
As shown on the below map, the Greenway will connect Kennett Township and Kennett Square Borough to each other as well as neighboring municipalities, including New Garden Township, East Marlborough Township and New Castle County, Delaware. The vision of the Greenway is to further connect to regional trail systems such as the Brandywine Creek Greenway, the Northern Delaware Greenway, and the Philadelphia Circuit.
Update on Chandler Mill Road
The current segments in planning and design are off-road trail segments between Herb Pennock Park and Hillendale Road, and a designated trail parallel to Chandler Mill Road.
The Township has received a lot of feedback from residents regarding concerns over making Chandler Mill Road one-way. As a result, the Township has proceeded to analyze options for a trail on Chandler Mill that also would allow for bidirectional vehicular traffic on Chandler Mill Road. This was publicly discussed in late December at the Board of Supervisors meeting and at the January Trails & Sidewalks Committee meeting. A new task order directing this effort was discussed and approved at the Board of Supervisors’ meeting on January 4th. We encourage you to check out this memo prepared by Christina Norland, current chair of the Kennett Trails and Sidewalks Committee as well as the Executive Director of Kennett Trails Alliance, on the current status of the project, which is publicly available as part of the January 4th agenda, here.
Please fill out this short survey by January 31, 2021 to guide the design of your community greenway. We want to hear about your ideas, wishes, anxieties, and excitement!
