Environmental Sustainability

The Environmental Sustainability Program designs and implements various initiatives designed to maintain and improve the overall natural and developed environment of Kennett Township and the surrounding area.  Major initiatives include:

Kennett Greenway – plan and implement a ~12-mile open space corridor with a multi-use recreational circuit trail to provide better access to their many natural, recreational, cultural and historical sites throughout the Kennett Township and Kennett Square Borough.

Active Transportation Plan – plan and implement preferred routes for bicycles and pedestrians throughout the township and its neighboring municipalities in order to improve health and safety and to reduce traffic and environmental pollution.

Land Stewardship – determine and promote best practices for land owners and developers in such priority areas as water quality, storm water management, carbon emissions, alternative energy, recycling and waste management, open space preservation, stream restoration and native plant and wild-life management.

Vertical Farming – leveraging the existing infrastructure that currently supports the area’s $500M+ mushroom industry, plan and promote its diversification into other forms of indoor agriculture such as green produce and medicinals.
